Why is it called a 'Black Forest Cake'? The actual Black Forest is in Germany; is there anything "German" about this cake, in terms of history or cuisine?
From what I have researched and found out for you is that there is more than one idea for its name. It is said that the cake could have gotten its name from traditional costume's worn by women in the Black Forest which is located in Germany. Thier dress was represented by the chocolate flakes, thier shirt is the cream on the cake, and the cherries are represented by pom-poms on thier hat. This is one reason I have found for the name of Black Forest Cake.
There are other reasons for the name that historians have placed onto the name. Another would be that chocolate was first introduced into cakes and cookies in the 16th century. That it did originate in the Black Forest region in Germany. This region was well known for its sour cherries adn clear cherry brandy. They combined the two, the cherries and chocolate and thus the Black Forest cake became known.
Hope these ideas help, I can put together an entire essay on this idea if you like.
